So I recently made a side goal to explore more of the cities across Iowa. Since moving to Iowa two years ago we’ve been to Des Moines a couple times, but only for work, errands, and the Iowa State Fair – never to truly explore the city. Looking for a weekend adventure, we hopped in the car and drove a couple hours to Des Moines, Iowa.
It was a spur of the moment idea and rather rushed, but we still managed to cram in lunch at Tacopocalypse (which is finally opening up two locations in Iowa City!), a guided tour of the Iowa State Capitol, shopping at Domestica (where we bought some Iowa-love art for our new house!), a coffee date at Mars Coffee Bar, some mall shopping and new house furniture brainstorming, and dinner at Eatery A.
Here are some pictures from the day…
▲ Confession, I’ve only toured the Wisconsin Sate Capitol before this, but how beautiful is this building? We took a guided tour to the top of the dome and into the various legislative rooms. Each room was adorned with Czech-inspired chandeliers, a beautiful nod to Iowa’s Czech heritage.
▲ The grounds leading up to the state capitol had a unique view of the downtown Des Moines skyline and we were pretty excited to stumble across a huge stone map of Iowa, outlining the state’s counties. Howdy, Johnson county / Iowa City!
▲ I’m in love with the unique bike racks that are scattered across the downtown area – every single one was different and a public art display in itself.
Outside of this trip to Des Moines, I’ve been busy amping up both my freelance and wholesale graphic design prints… all while I have our new house‘s kitchen renovation plans, paint colors, furniture arrangements, and landscape ideas dancing through my head. So more from me soon and until then, happy Monday friends.
