Searching for ways to jump-start your creativity and ambition for the day by drinking yet another cup of coffee and just a few more minutes of internet surfing, is not going to help. We all know that, and yet we continue doing it. You know why? Because we’re procrastinators. Because we’re tired. Because we just don’t want to do that thing that really needs to be done right now.
So here’s my list of tried-and-true techniques, from one procrastinator to another, on how to find focus and stop procrastinating. Right now.
ONE | shut down your computer.
Seriously, turn it completely off. It probably has some obnoxious updates to run anyway. Once it’s off, place a notepad and pen next to it and for the next 20 minutes, scribble down any bits of inspiration or to-do list objectives that cross your mind. This will allow you to clear your mind and when you return to your computer, you’ll have an energized list of things to focus on for a more efficient day. What should you do with these 20 minutes? Try the following tips…
TWO | walk away from your desk.
It may seem counter-productive but believe me, walking away from what you should be doing, will allow you to return with a refreshed mind so instead of lethargically plunking along at what you need do be doing, you’ll be energetically hopping through the day’s tasks.
THREE | do your hair.
No really, do (or redo) your hair. Odds are, you’re feeling unmotivated because you’re tired. Feeling good about how you look will help you feel like you’re rocking this whole life thing, and you’ll be more apt to tackle today’s to-do list. My recommendation? Try that new ‘do that you saw on pinterest (HERE’s my hair updo board for inspiration).
FOUR | go workout.
FIVE | drink a glass of water.
You could be feeling doubly tired because you’re dehydrated. THIS article says it all.
The takeaway? Walk away from what you’re struggling to focus on, get your heart rate up, and have some water. You’ll be able to finish that dreaded task faster than if you’d stayed at your desk, finding ways to waste time while internet-surfing.
Now, stop reading this and go do your hair!
