Have you ever had one of those moments where you said or did something that when you later thought about it, you slapped your forehead in embarrassment and dwelled on the situation… trying to decide just how ridiculous you seemed to those around you?
I recently had one of those embarrassing moments, and what made it worse was that I caught the side-glance and snicker that two ladies exchanged at my expense. It was a true “Mean Girls” dynamic, and exactly the kind of thing I’m constantly talking to my Girls On the Run team about overcoming. Who knew that these demeaning gestured are still so present among us grown women?
So just like any human on planet Earth, I replayed the scenario a billion and a half times in my head before convincing myself that my blunder was the same as anyone else’s daily goof-ups. We all say things we wish we could shove back into our half-asleep brains and we all do things we wish we could make up for. Which means we all know that feeling: when you just want to rewind and say something far less ridiculous, but instead you have to roll with it and hope to goodness that the person who caught your blunder can see past your oddities.
So I have a challenge for you…
Be nice to that gal who stutters and says something stupid every time you see her. Be nice to that guy who’s driving way too slow on the highway. Be nice to that elderly couple who can’t figure out the self-checkout at Target. You have no idea what these people are going through – what their personal story is – and you shouldn’t need to in order to be nice to them. Just be nice because you can.
As much as we all like to think we have everyone figured out, we simply don’t. Everyone has their own battle be it emotional, medical, financial… we don’t need to be battling one-another’s side glances along with it.
Besides, who knows when your next dorky moment will show it’s colors and don’t you want to be shown the same kindness and sincerity when it does?
