Last Tuesday we signed the papers and officially took ownership of our new house! We wanted a house where we could roll up our sleeves and make it our own, and between the quaint perfection of our new neighborhood and the enormous back yard with loads of full grown trees, we fell in love with this 60’s beauty (orange kitchen counters and all!).
We’ve been waiting since February for our June closing date, so we’ve had plenty of time to brainstorm all the updates we want to do and which we’d do first.
So last week, Brandon and I toasted to the new house and then set to work painting.
One of my favorite things about this property is the setting – there are loads of full-grown trees, a big yard, and the birds… oh the birds! They’re everywhere and after living in new construction these past three years, listening to the chatter of birds is something I now realize I miss hearing.
Although, I’m not a huge fan of this nest that a Robin mama decided to build on our patio’s lighting fixture. We were about to remove the nest when I decided to stick my phone up there and snap a picture to make sure there weren’t any babies inside… lo and behold, three blue eggs. We can’t stand to ruin this cozy little nest she built for her (hopefully) soon to hatch babies, so we’re waiting until they all migrate this fall to remove the nest.
And! Over this past weekend, my dad (who I swear knows how to do just about everything) came to Iowa City to help us dive into renovating one of our bathrooms! It’s a tiny guest bathroom and laundry room combo that was in extreme need of help. The overall floor plan was a terrible use of space which made the room too cramped to be comfortably used, and some very dated tile in the shower was falling off the wall which meant… a rotten floor.
In one weekend we removed the appliances, jackhammered through the basement floor, rerouted the soil pipe to the other side of the room, and rewired the electrical and plumbing that was either not up to today’s building codes or was sloppily done in the past.
Next up Brandon and I are going to finish demolishing the shower and then we’ll begin hanging new sheet rock. Thanks to all the wood rot we found surrounding the shower (honestly, who uses a shower that has tile falling off the wall?!), the extra task of rebuilding a wall next to the sink has been added to the list. But looking ahead, I can hardly wait to get my new flooring installed! I chose THESE interlocking planks since they’ll insulate against the cold basement floor and they’ll tie in well with the hardwood floors upstairs. *swoon*

Oh! And HERE‘s the Snapchat video recap I took throughout the day – Koda’s excitement at the end is my favorite. Cute furry dogs for the win!
