Last weekend we ventured to Minnesota’s Twin Cities for month two of my #12tripsin12months goal! We’ve lived in both Minneapolis (Hopkins, technically) and St. Paul (Lilydale) for nearly five years before packing our bags and moving to Arkansas for a year, so although this month’s trip wasn’t to a brand new destination, it remains one of our favorite destinations. We also have family in the area so it doubled as a chance to see my sisters and celebrate my soon-to-arrive nephew number two!
This year’s valentine’s day definitely ranks as one of my all-time favorites – my sister made red velvet pancakes for breakfast and chocolate fondue with fresh fruit for dessert, while the day was spent visiting all of Brandon and my favorite spots around the city. You’ll notice that most of them are food-related! What can I say, this city knows good food…
▲ Minnehaha Falls is where Brandon proposed to me! We’ve been visiting this park and hiking it’s trails ever since some of our first dates, so it’s always a special place to go back to.
▲ Oh my, there are SO many food places I want to recommend! Colossal Cafe is one of our favorites for breakfast but their lunch is also incredible. Everything’s made from scratch and it’s clear that they focus on fresh, quality ingredients. I ordered red lentil soup and a veggie melt which had the most amazing shaved and marinated eggplant with avocado aioli. swoon!
▲ Does this give you spring fever much?! We’ve always loved Como Park Zoo & Conservatory for the incredible botanical gardens – it’s such a peaceful and wonderfully humid atmosphere to escape to in the dead of winter. We almost forgot it was 5° F with a windchill of -10° F outside… almost.
▲ Grand Ole Creamery is our number one favorite homemade ice cream shop in St. Paul – this is where some of our earliest dates were and we even had some engagement photos taken here. The absolute cherry on top with this place is their waffle cones (not pictured – we were too full to order a huge waffle cone!). They make their waffle cones from scratch here (you can smell them on the griddle from down the block!) and drop a whopper in the bottom of the cone to keep it your ice cream from dripping through. The best!
We also had every intention of visiting Yum! Kitchen and Bakery (this is one of my absolute favorite eateries and also the place where Brandon bought the cupcake he used to propose to me!) for dinner but were too full, so, next time!
