I love making lists. So much, that I used to make lists for everything until I realized it was actually making me feel even more stressed and unorganized, so I stopped making them for a solid month. I was constantly making lists for everything that ran through my head and I wound up with 1) a heckuva lot of lists and 2) ridiculously long lists. Two big no-nos even The Muse and LifeHack warn against.
I’m back on the list-making train now but this time I’ve been careful to only let myself write lists that are truly going to help me be more productive. That means I’m holding myself to making fewer lists and I’m keeping them shorter.
In other words, I’ve become a list snob.
I’m being more honest with myself about what I can realistically accomplish in my set amount of time and pushing aside all my “oh this will only take one hour, I can squeeze it in” tasks for a future list. To help hold myself to this fewer and smaller list goal, I coined a 3 Things This Weekend List in our household. Every weekend, Brandon and I make a list of three fun family things we want to do and three productivity related things we want to do. So it’s technically six things, but three for each category and three makes my catchy phrase more… catchy (six things this weekend? not so much).
We’ve been test-running this weekend approach for a month now and it’s making such a big impact in how we feel by the end of the weekend! Instead of getting so wrapped up in crossing things off our chore list that we don’t do anything fun as a family, we’re now striking a good balance that makes us feel both accomplished come Sunday evening and restored for the week ahead.
Since this has been going so well for us and since we’d only been using scratch pieces of paper to jot down our 3 Things This Weekend List, I decided to make a prettier version that we can hang on our fridge. So I want to pass on my sage weekend warrior wisdom to you (and by sage weekend warrior wisdom, I mean the 3 Things This Weekend List). So HERE IT IS. (totally free, just follow the link I just gave to download/print the pdf from Dropbox).
Cheers to the long holiday weekend!
